Grunion are small, silvery fish found along the coast of California and Baja California, Mexico. They belong to the Atherinopsidae family and are scientifically known as Leuresthes tenuis. Grunion are unique for their remarkable spawning behavior, where they ride high tides onto sandy beaches to lay eggs during full and new moons from March to August. Males wrap around females to fertilize the eggs externally, which are then buried in the sand. After about 10 days, the eggs hatch, and the young grunion return to the ocean. Grunion are an important food source for various marine predators and are also popular among recreational fishers.
